The Piano Tuning Industry is not Regulated like Other Trades such as Electricians & Plumbers who are required to be Registered & Licensed, making it even more important you use a registered, trained technician to look after your instrument!
Pianos have been not produced in Australia since 1975, so where has the tuner received training?
Does a Good Piano Player make someone an Experienced Piano Tuner? No, training is essential.
Can my Music Teacher tell me when my piano needs tuning and assess the condition of my Piano? No, they are a Music Teacher not a Piano Technician.
A Professionally Trained Piano Tuner/Technician is not expensive because they are highly trained to have very specific, and a ‘not so common’ skill set. They can spot potential problems before they even become problems, which saves you money in the long term.
Always ask the following questions
- What training have they had?
- Are they registered with the PTA or are they a Kawai or Yamaha Registered Technician?
- Is this your main business or do you do it as a hobby on the side?
- If something needs repair or an adjustment in addition to the tuning, like a sticking key or if a string breaks, can they provide this service?
- Do they know how to Regulate your Piano to Suit how you play?
- Are they also a Piano Restorer/Rebuilder? (This is especially essential if you have an older Piano/Pianola Player Piano?)
As is currently happening within the industry, even here on the Gold Coast, ones who are Piano Players decide they will start Piano Tuning with no training, just buying a tuner lever & a tuning app calling themselves a ‘Piano Technician.’ In the last 10years on the Gold Coast we have been called out to numerous jobs where these so-called tuners have not been able to tune to the correct pitch or make needed repairs that are part of a regular tuning service!
